Sailing Around The World Record
Would Canada’s courts let a 14-year old girl sail the world?
“Do Canadians know” that in the international news, there’s a Dutch 14-year old girl who wants to break a record for the youngest person to sail the world?
The girl is supposedly an excellent sailor and she was even born on a boat in New Zealand while her parents were sailing the world.
Anyways, her dreams were shattered by the Dutch court so much that she ran away from home and went to the Dutch carribbean island of Saint Martaan, using her New Zealand passport while flying out of Paris.
If the girl lived in the Maritimes of Canada, would Canada’s Government likely give her the opportunity to sail around the world?
How would most Canadians view the case of this young girl?
Edit: The Dutch court threatened to remove the girl from her parents if they don’t follow the order that she NOT be allowed to sail the world because the Netherlands believes it compromises the girl’s welfare since she’s too young.
Yep, we know. Believe it or not we do get international news here. At the same time, our courts would most likely take the same view as the Dutch. If her dream is shattered…too bad. She can live a long healthy life hating the decision at least. As Hawkeye said on MASH to the soldier too young to be in the military (played by Ron Howard by the way) “lets hope it’s a long and healthy hate”.
