Atlantic Challenge this summer Tall Ships Festival starts May 2.
The ships that cross the North Atlantic twice, more than 4 months and cover a total of 7,000 + nautical miles, 500 years after the old trade routes.
In his initial trip that will benefit from the reliable, westward trade winds. With peaks of 13 meters per second (30 mph) will provide spectacular racing conditions.
Ships congregate at the busiest fishing port in Spain, Vigo, between 30 April-3 May to the beginning of the first stage of the race. On May 3 start at 900 nautical mile journey south-southwest of Tenerife, the capital the Canary Islands archipelago.
After four days (14 to 17 May) Navy off the 21sq. island of Bermuda miles – 2,600 nautical miles west. They're going to start navigating the city on June 1 and will be the centerpiece of the 400th Anniversary of the permanent settlement of the island.
From 15 June, the fleet will slowly disappear into the western horizon, to Charleston, SC. The ships remain in port for six days (June 26 to 28) before marching north to the largest city in New England, Boston, Mass.
Boston and organized vessels height in 1992 and 2000, and has the history on every corner. It's where the American Revolution began and is also home to the Boston Tea Party, the Battle of Bunker Hill and Paul Revere's house. The festival will remain here for seven days from 7 July-13, include public walks, Salute Ball and of course the parade of sail.
So, is 370 miles north-northeast at Halifax, NS (16 to 20 July) where celebrations include the 250th anniversary of the Canadian port Naval and its rich maritime traditions. After hosting tall ships four times in just over two decades, Nova Scotia is no stranger to the hundreds of thousands of people who come to witness these incredible parties. More than 600,000 visited Halifax for the 2007 event.
The final career game, starting Monday 20 July is 2350 miles nautical eastward through the powerful North Atlantic to the last port of Belfast, Northern Ireland (13 to 16 of August). During this crossing vessels benefit from the prevailing westerlies (predictably winds from west to east).
Belfast will be the Home of the tall ship Grand Finale celebrations.
12 ships of the class A '- the largest class of all Tall Ships – provide a magnificent backdrop for four days and nights of nautical nirvana!
