what is the highest hp, outboard motor that may be used on a Cape Dory Typhoon 19 foot sailboat, safely?

I want to use the boat for whale watching when we are not sailing and the currents can be up to 4 or 5 knots. The hull speed is six knots.

There is no USCG plate on this older sailboat, however I can tell you that Carl Alberg designed these boats to be extremely sea worthy. I had one of the larger 24′ kittiwakes that preformed well with both a 6 hp and a 9.5 Evinrude. I would say that you should check the engine mounting and size and go with what fits best, Probably the 6 hp short shaft. Good luck! I do have a question though, can you “chase” whales under sail?
