What do I have to do to start sailing?

I’m about to finish up my BA in a few months, and I’ve got life plans for the next few years… but after that, I want to start sailing as a hobby! I want to go on an awesome trip with my (future) wife, and two other couples.
What should I do to prepare for this goal?
Obviously, I need to save money. What kind of money would I be looking at?
What are some other kinds of things I can do? I hear that being a crew member on a sail boat is great experience. How/where can I do this? Is it free?
Do I need to be a highly experienced veteran before I can do a trip like one across the gulf of mexico (say, from florida, through bahamas, down to brazil, or something)?
Aside from saving money, is this a goal that can be achieved in, say, 7 or 8 years?

hey,
i’d say it deponds on what you want to do. If you want to sail a small boat, by your self, your talking a few hundred to a few thousand. if you are starting off and want to sail a keel boat, i’d say start by crewing. It’s loads of fun, you generally don’t have to pay for anything, you get free stuff/food/get to go to parties, and you get to learn alot, and get experiances on different boats and learn different ways to do things. If you own a keel baot, it can cost as much as you want. i guess to answer you question, i’d need to know if you are talking small or big boat, i like both personally, they are completly different experiances.
