Note high jazz trumpet legends almost single-handedly change the desire of young trumpeters worldwide for decades. A hearing one of these giants live was a wonderful and inspiring experience, and created a desire in the trumpet of many players who could be considered almost cult for trumpeters.

Maynard Ferguson, Cat Anderson, Doc Severinsen are just a few that were much sought after players … each was an order of the top register up to and beyond Double C. A The more players tried to ascend to these upper register notes, plus the mystery built. Expertise in all aspects of the trumpet can find. Becoming partly confusing, and some very wrong.

In 2004, I had the pleasure and honor to be part of the Maynard Ferguson big band, and came to share much time with the "Boss" (as we called him). A While in his band, I have to ask questions, take notes and learn from the master. Â

What most Players starting this quest is not bad mostly offset and not see what really generates the highest notes on the trumpet. Â It is pure brute force that produces these notes with power and control is a balance between air and openness.

To begin this journey properly, a player must master "Whisper" tones … extreme soft playing that helps the opening of the room the size of a pinhole, without pinching or forcing the facial muscles. A starting point with a second G line and keep it as smooth as possible for long periods of time (2 minutes to 20 minutes) and allowing a wide rest will start a player on the right track. Â As the player develops more control, scales, etudes, and tunes can be incorporated into practice that will take the player to advance to notes higher. Â Once control has been established, strong play is just push a little more air and allowing the opening to open slightly. Â

There is no quick fix to this. Â For many players this is a long trip. Â Especially if the trumpeter has been practicing the "highest / Stronger / faster "method of months or years. To old habits have to be broken … but once you are, the trumpet will be surprised how easy it may be up to double high C and beyond!
