Practice in low winds and relatively shallow water. Learning to surf is quite difficult, so that navigation in ideal conditions, will increase your chances of success.
Zozobra practice. It's going to happen sooner or later, so be prepared to learn to do it safely.
Wear a lifejacket. Vests jackets are a good idea anytime you are in the water, but are essential when you are in a situation where you would expect to have problems.
