I intend to start a sailing course in London, but am a bit confused ..?

I want a RYA approved course, but as I understand the association not running any courses, just ran credit courses for other private societies / clubs. Is this correct? Besides, I'm a little confused about of different types of courses. For example, a sailing course for boats suitable for navigation of a large sailing yacht (ie 42 feet)?

Where now is how my wife and I started 8 years ago. We are total novices then, but we had the dream. We have spent the last 3 years of life on board our 45-foot yacht sailing ( "Little Roundtop") in the Greek islands. You're right that the RYA does not run any of the schools, but keeping a close surveillance in all schools they accredit. So be sure to choose a school approved by the RYA. The master instructor usually decide for themselves whether they have complied with standards for each course and the granting of licenses. For advanced qualifications (PER and Yachtmaster) will do an external review by an RYA qualified examiner (s much like a 2-day test drive). Cruising and sailing dinghies are very different. If you choose a sailing cruise (as we did) will probably learn on a yacht about 36 feet and there will probably be 6 people in it (including the master instructor). It is very narrow, but only if they get along with people great fun! Most schools crews deliberately mix some are more advanced than others. This gives beginners a preview of learning what will be next, but, more importantly, gives to those who received standard scores a team without experience to handle! The way of training basic (as I remember) is: Competent Crew (5-Mar-day based on practice) Theory Day Skipper (shore-based 5-day) Practice Day Skipper (5-Mar-days based practices) PER / Yachtmaster Theory (5-days-shore based) per practice (5-Mar-based day) then you need to build miles Marine to have one (or both if desired): PER Examination Yachtmaster both the general examination, 2-Mar days based on tests, usually with two other candidates you. The tests are very similar indeed, but a much higher level expected of candidates Yachtmaster. We loved every class we've done. You're fun loving, with like-minded people all learn the same things. I can not recommend enough RYA scheme. We make great sailors (we're still learning it – and it will always) but it made us safe – and it is more important than anything. Have fun!
