The Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks became common in the 1800s. These single-masted sailing vessels were relatively cheap to build, and shallow depth allowed to dredge for oysters near the coast.

Chesapeake Bay Skipjacks were often built by sailors in their backyards. Some of these sailing ships still exist and have a strong following of fans of candle.

Sailboats are also classified by the type of helmet. Most from the sailboats are constructed with a mono or single hull. However, some boats are built as multi-hull boats. These include catamaran (double hull) and tri-Maran (triple hull) ships. Comparing a mono-hull boat multi-hull acceleration is very different. In a multihull boat accelerating at a maximum speed is very fast and almost instantaneous.

Sailing requires a high level of experience and skill. Crew must be able to rapidly change platforms rudder and dagger to change speed and direction of the boat in a variety of conditions of the sea. In addition to directing and managing ship sails, the crew also must have at least basic knowledge of some of the skills that are normally the responsibility of the captain. These may include weather forecasting, navigation, emergency repairs, marine electronics, first aid and others.
