Hire a boat and go on holiday.?

Hi, I had a brilliant Idea this morning (well its probably not).
Can you hire a boat in the UK then sail to the south of france, then round to spain, then Italy, then Maybe Greece then sail back again?
Obviously I don’t own a boat, but this sounds like a really fun holiday, and I was just wondering if it was possible to do?
-What are the costs?
-What are the dangers?
