Sailing the Aircraft Carrier Intrepid to Pearl Habor ???

From a 6-30-06 Wall Street Journal article about the aircraft carrier Intrepid: “In February 1944, a torpedo smashed the ship’s rudder and the crew rigged a sail in the lower decks to steer the way back to Pearl Harbor.” I’d be interested in details how this was done. Thanks.

They used some material used to cover lifeboats and held them with hatchcovers.
It gave them minimal steering control to get home.
