Sailing Racing Strategy
Where can I find a good book on sailboat racing strategies and help?
I am looking for a book on sailboat racing strategies or other helpful things about races. I sail a 420 so it would preferably be about dinghy starts and races. Thanks
I would suggest starting out with “Sailing Smart: Winning Techniques, Tactics, And Strategies” by Buddy Melges, an incredible small boat sailor, as well as a couple of choices by Gary Jobson, one of the best tacticians ever: “Gary Jobson’s Championship Sailing : The Definitive Guide for Skippers, Tacticians, and Crew”, and “Championship Tactics: How Anyone Can Sail Faster, Smarter, and Win Races”. For the definitive primer on racing rules, the top choice is “Paul Elvstrom Explains the Racing Rules of Sailing: 2005-2008 Rules”. These three books, along with joining the 420 Class Association at http://www.420sailing.org/ should cover all the basics and get you ready for competitive and enjoyable sailing! All the books are available from Amazon.com, and, as of 2 October 2008, all are in stock.
