Scenic Lake Cumberland Kentucky, with its 1255 miles of coastline, is one of the capitals of the modern world houseboating vacation. Nearly 2000 years, Lake Nemi, a small volcanic lake near Rome, Italy, was the capital houseboating the Holy Roman Empire and the home of two luxurious vessels leisure recreation belonging to the famous Roman Emperor Caligula. Although the ships were deliberately looted and sunk soon after the murder of the unpopular emperor, of its existence later captured the imagination of historians, archaeologists and in particular a 15th century Catholic cardinal during the Renaissance and the Age 20 on behalf of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.

Through the centuries, floating palaces Caligula was the stuff of legends and buried treasures. The fishermen of Lake Nemi ships said they could see ghostly underwater contours.

In 1446, fourteen centuries after the wreck, the Renaissance, Cardinal Don Prospero Colonna, Lord of Nemi, assumed the difficult task of raising the historic ships, Unfortunately, their efforts failed. It would take another 500 years before the vessels were successfully raised its watery grave.

Mussolini and 2,000 years of the tunnel

In the late 19th century, the Italian government took over the efforts of private citizens "to salvage ships. In 1928, Italian dictator Benito Mussolini used Roman engineering genius to solve your problem today.

The Romans had built a tunnel a mile long to help control the water level of Lake Nemi and prevent flooding. Mussolini used the same tunnel to drain the lake for a period of three years and set out the historic ships.

The Nemi ships, as they are known, are the two largest ships ever discovered Roman and crafts typical of the new technology and the amazing story. The ships, rowing a galley and a sailing vessel, each measuring approximately 240 meters long and were lavishly decorated with mosaic floors, marble columns and bronze statues. Other artefacts uncovered included a bronze lion, leopard and heads fox.

After nearly 1,900 years at the bottom of Lake Nemi, Caligula's pleasure boats were eventually rescued. Inside a building structure, teams of historians and archaeologists began an academic study of the remarkable artifacts from ships. The thrill of discovery was short-lived, when, barely a decade later, the ships and the museum that shows that burned in the chaos of World War II.

Today a museum of lake Nemi tells the story of eccentric houseboats Caligula, showing scale models, architectural drawings and rare artifacts that survived the fire. Outside, one of size reconstruction of the hull of the sailboat is on the screen.
