how to find friends?

hello everyone, ive just moved to a new city to study, but i dont no a single sole here, and after being by my self for over 2 weeks now id like to know how everyone else finds friends, how do you just meet people at the pub or clubs when they are all involved in their own groups? im the kind of person who thinks before i open my mouth and find it hard to keep a conversation going, i sail my own boat, but cannot seem to find any companions, im not the kind of person to use internet dating, it seems a bit lame to me. any suggestions? even how to keep simple conversations going?
