Sailing Solo Across The Atlantic

What’s the youngest someone could be to sail solo across the atlantic?

The record for youngest person is 14 years old.

Agreed there is no legal minimum, and no requirement for a permit either. And the record is indeed 14 years old.

But there are a great many caveats.

The young lad who did it at 14 very wisely chose the (comparatively) easy route, east to west by the Trade Winds route, and to the great relief of most sensible people he was accompanied by his father in another boat. Even so, I don’t think I would want a fourteen year old of mine to do it quite so young.

The real questions are maturity and physical strength and experience, and the ability to cope with emergencies and with unexpectedly severe weather.

Then comes the choice of which route; even on the easy route one can get pretty severe gales, and the northerly route has occasionally been known to produce hurricane strength winds.
