"The Black Ship: A Novel of Crosspoint" by Diana Pharaoh Francis is a high-seas adventure with descriptions so vivid you can feel dizzy. This is the second book of the Crosspoint but the series is featuring a new cast, occasionally bringing characters in "cipher." The world of capacity is detailed and gives you a feeling of being there. The characters are layered with flaws and weaknesses. A good story line mixes politics, corruption and betrayal with a healthy dose of magic.

Thorn is a pilot, a man endowed with the ability to browse Crosspoint's Mar magical and dangerous. When betrayed by someone in the pilots' union is prohibited navigation. After Thorn is kidnapped and forced to serve aboard a ship without mark and unregistered. The Eidolon a bloody and Thorn ship at sea is battling a mad captain, a mutinous crew, and a saboteur who intends to keep the ship from the wall port.

I love the way the author has created a unique world, however, the centers of each of her books in a new hero or heroine. "The cipher, "was the story of Lucy," The Black Ship "is a swashbuckling novel told from the perspective of Thorn. His story is one of friendship and sacrifice and readers feel firsthand their trials as they face enormous obstacles in the path of self discovery. His characterization is excellent and the secondary cast adds depth.

Those who love the stories of sailors and naval battles, will not be disappointed. Some conflicts come to a solution, but the conclusion leaves enough loose ends for a sequel. I'll be looking for the third book – "La Marea", due out May 5, 2009.
