How long would it take to sail from San Francisco to Oxnard, CA.?

In a 30 foot sailboat with a hull speed of say 5-6 knots, how long would it take to sail from San Francisco to Oxnard? And how far out would you sail from the coast on that trip? Taking shipping lanes, and possible foul weather into account.

Auntie: Thank you for your concern. I however have learned many things from yahoo answers. Not all correspondence is derogatory, or misleading, we just have to sift through it. Example: I have sailed from Long Beach to Cabo and back, in April-May. However I haven’t spent time above Pt. Conception except on dive, and fishing boats. The weather above point conception is rougher than the waters I did my cruising in. If someone has actually sailed from Frisco to LA I will know by their answer, and any information will help. As it is there is no top answer at this time. No one who has sailed these waters has answered. But we have time yet. Let’s be patient.

I have done San Francisco to Santa Cruz, and it took about a day. So that distance is about 1/5 of the distance that you have in mind. However, the boat that I was sailing was in the 40-foot range, so it had slightly higher cruising speed.

If I recall correctly, if you go about 20 to 30 miles out, the winds will not be influenced by land formations. I think that it is mentioned in Cornell’s book about how far out to go to clear the effects of land masses along California’s coast.

The prevailing winds and currents favor a southbound trip. If you intend to do a return trip, it may take a lot longer.

At least off Northern California, the winds and waves can get pretty rough, so I highly recommend that you learn about heavy weather sailing.
