Before you can learn to identify trouble in your boat, it is important that you understand the working principles of your sail boat. A sail boat has very few moving parts and does not involve much wear and tear. At times, when you are sailing, the trouble could also be with the tide or the wind, and you would need experience to distinguish between the two. Here are some tips to help you;
- Before you set sail, you need to check the hull of your boat for any damages. Generally, the hull is very sturdy and not until the boat is very old that you get to see damages to the hull.
- The next important thing that could affect your sailing is the sail itself. The sail is always kept rolled and trimmed when the boat is stored. It is possible that some portion of the sail is ruptured during storage or while hoisting. If the sail is damaged, your sailing would be affected. Small damages to your sail can be corrected by a wire stitch or a patch, which you can do it yourself, with some practice. If there are several damages, the sail needs to be replaced.
- The rigging needs to be checked for damaged strands of wires or ropes. Usually the riggings are damaged at the ends and can be cut and re-tied. However, if the damage is too severe, the riggings have to be changed.
- The mast needs to pivot smoothly to help you change direction with the wind. The pivot of the mast needs to be kept well-oiled to prevent friction and damage.
