A widow of a remote village in Bihar, with its lower-caste lover, a real disgrace, a servant boy smug and orphaned daughter of his European master, a sea-American man with a mysterious past, a number of sailors stoaways, convicts, and many personalities and intriguing, all aboard the Ibis, a ship sailing from Calcutta to Mauritius. Diverse as the motley crew may seem, there is a chain of thread that binds their lives together. Gosh and weave the wire with great skill. A follower of Krishna looking for the reincarnation of his beloved God in the U.S. Marine Zachary. Sure to find his clubtin met his new god, who somehow manages to find a space ship and what follows is hilarious. Amitav has delicately sculpted this character with just enough humor and without a trace of contempt or scorn.
Amitav also yield to the temptation not to mention the freedom movement, even in step. Instead, he sticks to his election, describing in great detail the lucrative opium trade slave between India and Britain, the dynamics of the Asian economy in those days, the letter lines well drawn and rigid social mores. So all in all, Sea of Poppies is an intricately woven story and Amitav deliberately leaves a few loose end. After all, is the first of a trilogy! With Initially so glorious, is to ensure that the unraveling story about following twoan be so captivating. That the book did not win the Man Booker takes nothing away, or even add that Amitav Ghosh is a wonderful, smart and a master narrator of the story. This is essential reading on the Amazon Kindle.
